You Need Automobile Liability Insurance
July, 2007

Health care professionals recommend that we all have a complete physical exam each year even if we are feeling well.  The dental profession recommends a complete dental check up twice a year.  This is certainly good advice.  The best cure is prevention and catching problems early can prevent more serious problems in the future; but, when was the last time you had your motor vehicle insurance reviewed by a trained professional?

No one should own or operate any motor vehicle that is not covered by at least liability insurance.  If you do not have insurance and are involved in an accident, you could be subjected to a substantial claim and you might lose your driver’s license or have your license plates confiscated by the Department of Transportation.

The unfortunate truth is that there a many vehicles on the roads today that are uninsured.  If you have the misfortune of being involved in an accident with such a vehicle you may not be able to recover damages unless you have uninsured motorist insurance.  State law in Wisconsin requires that your insurance company must offer you this type of coverage.

Also, in Wisconsin, the minimum amount to liability insurance you can buy is $25,000.00.  Even a minor accident could result in medical expenses and lost earnings far in excess of that amount.  Ask your insurance company about underinsured motorist insurance.  Be sure you ask for a full explanation as to how this coverage works.

The declaration page of your insurance policy should tell you what coverage you have.
